Global dimension is a UK based website run by DEA (Development Education Association) an education charity that “promotes global learning” (their words). They seek to support ‘the global dimension in schools’ which from their seems to mean engaging with issues that cause us to thinkĀ outside the box of our context or country and look at issues that can help to bring humanity together.
In their introduction they state “
Education plays a vital role in helping children and young people recognise their responsibilities as citizens of the global community. It equips them with the skills required to make informed decisions and take responsible actions. By including the global dimension in teaching, links can easily be made between local and global issues… “
While I prefer the term ‘world’ rather than global, I think the resources on the site – which include lesson plans, case studies, leaflets, guides and links – will certainly help to spark some ideas and feed into work on cultural understanding. Given a context not only can music inspire and enthuse but can also bring us closer together with our neighbours.
