Beaterator

I came across an introduction to Beaterator today here - a new one for me. Already online here and out for sony PSP on Sept 29th. What caught my attention was the possibility of creating your own loops in a package like this (my guess is aimed at the ‘dabbler’). It seems like more and more programs aimed at this audience are becoming available that give greater creative opportunities to  the user rather then the prepackaged loop programs we saw a few years ago. This also caught my attention even more when I then passed by J Pisano’s blog on Microsoft’s new offering – songsmith. It seemed strange – this program seems to be going the other way. Doing more for the user. Do they both move toward more MUSICAL interactions? Or not?

Just found this post on here, tried the Beaterator, worked until I tried to drag a sound over to the loop creator, the sounds wouldn’t load. Help file said to make sure I’m using Flash v. 7, I’ve got v. 10 installed – maybe the Beaterator hasn’t been upgraded to work w/ v. 10 – ? Anyway, it looks cool, I agree w/ you, it’s another step forward as far as challenging students to create their own loops, & then being able to use them in the sequencer/interface (whatever you want to call it). Would love to try it w/ my students on the Smt Brd, which I think would be necessary to use – why are some of these Flash tools made w/ such little tiny buttons, words, etc.? By the way, have you seen the commercial MS had out for Songsmith? Just deadly, truly cringe-worthy. Another big FAIL for MS, both in product design AND marketing.
